NJSIAA Tournament
Group Championships
At Rutgers University
Group III
Old Tappan 5, Brick Memorial 0
Senior right-hander and Columbia commit Selden Kolkebeck pitched his 12th complete game of the season, his third shutout of the NJSIAA Tournament and drove in the final two runs of the game to cap off his standout season and carry the Golden Knights to their first state championship since 2008 with a win over the Mustangs.
Brick Memorial Brody Moore struck out the first two batters of the game, but opened up a cut on the side of his left middle finger in the process. Kolkebeck then worked a nine-pitch walk that set the stage for Old Tappan to score the game’s first run on a wild pitch with two out.
Two infield errors led to two more Old Tappan runs in the top of the fourth inning, with both runs scoring on the second error. Kolkebeck provided himself further insurance with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh inning.
Moore battled through five innings on 102 pitches, with only one of the three runs that cross the plate against him going down as earned runs. Junior left-hander Zach Pirnik pitched the final two innings six days after pitching a complete game vs. Delsea in the Group III semifinals.
Kolkebeck struck out Tyler Garbooshian in each of his first two at-bats, which snapped Garbooshian’s run of reaching on eight straight plate appearances heading into the game. Garbooshian led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and senior catcher Joe McGlynn followed with a two-out single to rightfield for his second hit of the game, but Kolkebeck stranded both runners. The senior right-hander then finished off his 92-pitch outing with a six-pitch seventh inning.
In 12 starts this season, Kolkebeck pitched 11 complete games and finished a perfect 12-0 with 126 strikeouts and 15 walks.

Group I
Point Beach 10, Pompton Lakes 4
After conceding three runs in the top of the first inning, the Garnet Gulls responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning and pulled away to beat the Cardinals and capture their first ever Group I championship.
Junior third baseman Carson Pfeifer got Point Beach on the board with an RBI infield single and senior shortstop Antonio Acevedo tied the game with a two-run double that he dropped inside the rightfield line. On the next batter, sophomore designated hitter Thomas Slobiski lined a two-run single to centerfield to give the Garnet Gulls a 5-3 lead.
Chad McConnell answered with an RBI single to cut Point Beach’s lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning and from there, Garnet Gulls senior right-hander Bennett Moberg settled in and pitched two scoreless innings in the third and fourth before turning the game over to senior left-hander Tommy Conroy.
Before Conroy took over in the top of the fifth, Point Beach added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first of the three scored when Pfeifer smacked a single into rightfield to advance junior leftfielder Brody Powers to third base. On the throw to home plate, the ball became lodged inside the chest protector of Pompton Lakes catcher Dylan Hazan, which allows each runner to advance one base.
After Powers scored to make it 6-4, Acevedo lined an RBI single to make it 7-4 and sophomore rightfielder Dylan Marquez knocked in another with an RBI single for an 8-4 Point Beach lead.
Conroy breezed through his first two innings on 12 pitches, retiring five batters on six pitches to start his relief outing.
In the bottom of the fifth, Point Beach scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Pfeifer that allowed freshman second baseman Mason Sesny to slide in safe after taking off from third. Acevedo capped the scoring by bunting for a single to plate courtesy runner Jalen Kreiger.
Point Beach racked up 10 stolen bases in the game, all of which the Garnet Gulls swiped in the third inning or later.
Conroy struck out the first batter of the seventh inning, induced a ground ball to Sesny for the second out and coaxed a game-ending fly ball to leftfield that landed in the glove of senior Jayden Kolans.
